OpenAI Chaos, Government stepping in or Bigger Fish will eat it?
Why was it that just four board members had the authority to fire the company’s CEO? Why were some of the board members so inexperienced at the board level? Furthermore, why was Microsoft, by far OpenAI’s largest backer, not represented on the board? The company’s unique structure has the answers to such queries, but understanding it requires going back to 2015.OpenAI was steadfastly non-profit when it originally got its start. It said in a news statement that “our aim is to build value for everyone rather than shareholders,” which was extremely apparent. Is this just a game of thrones or Government taking over?

OpenAI was founded in December 2015 by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, and Wojciech Zaremba, among others. Over the years, OpenAI has garnered attention for its cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence and its commitment to ethical considerations in the development of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence research laboratory consisting of the for-profit OpenAI LP and its non-profit parent company, OpenAI Inc. OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity. They aim to build safe and beneficial AGI or help others achieve this outcome.
But the trouble comes to those with success and offering free services to the public!
OpenAI has expressed its dedication to ensuring that AGI benefits all of humanity. The organization is committed to avoiding uses of AI or AGI that could harm humanity or unduly concentrate power. OpenAI has emphasized the importance of broad cooperation and working with other research and policy institutions to create a global community that addresses AGI’s global challenges.
However, the development and deployment of advanced AI technologies raise ethical and regulatory concerns globally. Governments and regulatory bodies are actively exploring frameworks and guidelines to govern the responsible development and use of AI. OpenAI, being at the forefront of AI research, is likely to be subject to evolving regulations in the field.
And the time of restrictions, closures or hostile take over has possibly come sooner than later!
The CEO of Microsoft has said that there would be “no OpenAI” without the support of his organization, disclosing that the US tech giant was not notified prior to Sam Altman’s termination. According to Satya Nadella, OpenAI board members did not get in touch with Microsoft, the company’s largest backer, prior to Altman’s dismissal as CEO on Friday.
What is happening behind closed doors and what is media not telling us?
On Monday, Microsoft declared that it had brought Altman and Greg Brockman, the former president of OpenAI who had resigned after his colleagues were fired, to a new AI division. Why such an outpour of negative emotions from Microsoft and why such a quick hiring of Altman? Are the worlds splitting on AI front? Who is trying to extinguish free service to population and what are the consequences? Hundreds of workers at OpenAI, including co-founder and board member Ilya Sutskever, have signed a letter requesting the resignation of the company’s remaining board members or their employment at Microsoft’s new initiative, which is being led by Sam Altman. But why? AI tech giants are cooking up a big stew and the cook pot is about to boil over.

In July 2019, OpenAI and Microsoft announced a partnership in which Microsoft committed to investing $1 billion in OpenAI. This collaboration aimed to accelerate the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and foster advancements in AI technologies. Under the agreement, OpenAI agreed to use Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing services. The partnership with Microsoft provided OpenAI with financial support, technical resources, and access to Azure’s powerful cloud infrastructure. This collaboration is part of Microsoft’s broader efforts in the AI space, leveraging its cloud computing capabilities to support cutting-edge research and development in artificial intelligence.
Elon Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI but stepped down from its board in 2018. While he played a significant role in the early stages of OpenAI’s development, Musk’s direct involvement with the organization has lessened over time. It’s essential to note that Musk has been associated with various ventures and has his focus on companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink. But many believe he has something still to do with this free platform.
Elon Musk has expressed a nuanced perspective on artificial intelligence (AI) and has been both an advocate for its responsible development and a critic of potential risks. As of my last knowledge update in January 2023, here are some key aspects of Elon Musk’s stance on AI:
- Advocacy for Responsible AI: Elon Musk has consistently emphasized the need for responsible development and regulation of artificial intelligence. He has expressed concerns about the potential risks associated with the uncontrolled advancement of AI, particularly when it comes to artificial general intelligence (AGI) that surpasses human intelligence. Musk has advocated for proactive measures to ensure that AI systems are developed with safety in mind.
- OpenAI’s Mission: Elon Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI and has been associated with its mission to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity. OpenAI, founded in part due to concerns about AGI’s potential risks, aims to conduct research to make AGI safe and to encourage the adoption of safety research across the AI community.
- Concerns about AGI Risks: Musk has expressed significant concerns about the risks associated with AGI, including the potential for it to become uncontrollable and pose risks to humanity. He has warned about the need for regulatory oversight to prevent the development of AGI without adequate safety measures.
- Stepping Down from OpenAI’s Board: Elon Musk stepped down from OpenAI’s board in 2018. While he was a co-founder and early supporter of the organization, his reduced direct involvement in the day-to-day operations allowed OpenAI to seek a broad range of external perspectives.
As for how the world public sees Elon Musk, opinions vary widely. Musk is a high-profile entrepreneur known for founding and leading companies such as Tesla and SpaceX. He is admired by many for his ambitious pursuits in renewable energy, space exploration, and transportation. However, his communication style on social media, controversial statements, and involvement in various industries have also led to criticism and scrutiny.
Public perception of Elon Musk is diverse, with some viewing him as a visionary entrepreneur and others expressing concerns about certain aspects of his public behavior. Opinions on Musk often depend on individual perspectives regarding his impact on technology, business, and society. It’s essential to note that public opinions can change over time based on ongoing developments and actions.
