Two in five new immigrants want to leave Canada due to high cost of living
Canada, long heralded as a land of opportunity and a beacon of hope for new immigrants, is experiencing a disconcerting trend. Increasingly, recent arrivals are contemplating leaving the country due to the escalating cost of living. Recent data has highlighted the financial pressures faced by new immigrants. Housing, a primary concern, has seen prices skyrocket in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver. Even smaller cities are not immune, with rental rates and home prices rising significantly. For many new immigrants, the dream of owning a home or even staying in Canada feels increasingly out of reach.

In addition to housing, the cost of essential goods and services has surged. Groceries, transportation, and utilities have all seen price hikes. Families on a tight budget, particularly those who have recently arrived and are still finding their financial footing, are feeling the strain acutely. The cost of childcare and education, vital for families with young children, adds to the financial burden.

According to a recent survey, about 40% of the nation’s recent immigrants are considering relocating to a different province or possibly leaving the nation entirely due to the high cost of housing. The majority of respondents to the Angus Reid Institute survey stated that they would travel to Alberta if they were to leave the province they currently reside in.
Personal Stories Reflect Broader Struggle
Many immigrants arrive with high hopes, equipped with skills and ambitions to contribute to their new home. However, the reality of high expenses often overshadows these aspirations. A recent immigrant from India, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared, “I came to Canada for a better future for my family. But with the high cost of living, it feels like we are just surviving, not thriving.”
Another new arrival from Brazil echoed these sentiments, stating, “Back home, we heard stories of Canada being a place where you can achieve your dreams. But the financial pressures are overwhelming, and we’re considering returning to Brazil, despite the challenges there.”

Economic Implications and Policy Considerations
The potential exodus of immigrants due to financial pressures carries significant implications for Canada’s economy and demographic landscape. Immigrants play a crucial role in filling labor shortages, driving innovation, and contributing to cultural diversity. Their departure could lead to a talent drain, affecting various sectors and the broader economy.
Policy experts suggest that the government needs to address these concerns proactively. Measures such as affordable housing initiatives, subsidies for essential services, and targeted support for immigrant families could alleviate some of the pressures. Additionally, providing robust support for job placement and skills recognition can help new immigrants find stable, well-paying employment more quickly.
Community and Organizational Support
Local communities and organizations are stepping up to support new immigrants during these challenging times. Non-profits and community groups offer resources ranging from financial planning workshops to food banks and affordable childcare services. However, while these efforts are invaluable, they cannot fully compensate for systemic issues that require governmental intervention.
A Call to Action
The issue of new immigrants considering leaving Canada due to high living costs is a clarion call for policymakers, community leaders, and citizens. Ensuring that Canada remains a welcoming and supportive environment for newcomers is not just a matter of national pride but a strategic imperative for the country’s future prosperity.
As Canada continues to grow and evolve, it must prioritize the well-being of all its residents, particularly those who have chosen to call it home. Addressing the high cost of living is essential to maintaining the nation’s reputation as a land of opportunity and ensuring that the Canadian dream remains within reach for everyone.

Critique an Liberal Government
Many criticize Trudeau and his Liberal government for being to loose when it comes to immigration policies. Canada has received more immigrants in the last few years than ever before in such short period of time. Many believe, immigration since the Liberal government took office is to blame for the unaffordability issue throughout the country. Home builders just can’t keep up with the demand.
But not only home builders can’t keep up with the demand, but the entire infrastructure especially in southern Ontario is overwhelmed. Highways like 400, 401 and QEW are constant parking lots instead of cruising from A to B. Schools have hard time as well. Existing schools just can not accommodate the population growth. Combined with Doug Fords decision do decrease school funding is a recipe for disaster.
What should be done?
This is probably million dollar question, but common sense and a bit of economical knowledge would say: “we need to evaluate thing before we continue with same policies and thing we did in the past”! Simply, it does not work!
Nobody can blame immigrants for wanting what is best for their family. The question is whether Canada can meet its promises of being a terrific destination for immigration. Immigrating to a new nation is not simple; it is always fraught with conflicting emotions and financial stress. New immigrants frequently sell their homes in their home countries to fund their trip, immigration, and to start a new life in Canada.
What happens when all of that money is gone and Canada’s fantasy of prosperity comes crashing down? Nobody is truly talking about those difficulties!
One thing is certain: immigration has a significant impact on rising costs in Canada. However, one cannot condemn immigrants or their determination to provide a better future for their family. Instead, Canadian management, or what we call the Canadian government, ought to step in and reconsider what they’ve done in recent years.
