Head of State, King Charles Diagnosed with Cancer

Canadian headline of the day and possibly headline for months to come is the news about King Charles and recent cancer discovery. The information became public on Monday the 05. February, after Buckingham Palace issued a statement claiming that it was found during his most recent prostate surgery. The 75-year-old king has begun therapy, although it is unclear what type of cancer he has. The prognosis and cancer stage are not being disclosed further. The announcement was made one week after he was treated for his enlarged prostate and released from a private facility in London.

The 75-year-old King was diagnosed with cancer on Monday by Buckingham Palace, following surgery to address an enlarged prostate last month.

“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the palace said in a statement.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” they continued.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible,” the statement added. “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

The announcement was made one week following medical treatments that saw Kate and King Charles released from a private clinic in London. On January 17, Kate, 42, had an abdominal surgery for an undisclosed reason, while the king had a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate.

The monarch made the announcement “in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” in addition to wanting to allay rumours about his health. According to Buckingham Palace, Charles is appreciative with his medical team’s prompt action and professional treatment.

The king returned to London on Monday to start out-patient treatment, but no more information about his condition or prognosis is being provided, according to a palace official.

A coronation ceremony performed in May of last year, months after the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, gave Charles the throne. Elizabeth ruled until September 2022, when she passed away at the age of 96. She ruled Britain for 70 years, making her the country’s longest-reigning queen.

While Kate is still recovering, her husband Prince William is scheduled to resume his royal responsibilities on Wednesday by going to the London Air Ambulance Charity Gala Dinner.
